James Legal is - Officially - Outstanding!
That’s according to the judges of a prestigious annual regional legal awards.
We’re through to the final stage of the ‘Managing Partner of the Year’, ‘Pro-bono’ and ‘Law Firm 1-10’ categories of the Yorkshire Legal Awards.
Our shortlisting to be in the top three firms in Yorkshire, in three categories, recognises our Managing Director Nick Miller’s groundbreaking business ethos, based on taking a ‘fresh approach to law’, our commitment to supporting our local Hull community and our work on behalf of clients.
We’ll find out if we’ve won at a glittering ceremony at Leeds’ New Dock Hall on 12 October, hosted by BBC Breakfast sports correspondent – and 2009 Strictly Come Dancing winner – Chris Hollins.
This is the 16th year of the Yorkshire Legal Awards, which mark the pinnacle of the Yorkshire legal industry annual events calendar.
Organiser Paul Bunce said: “Our regional legal awards was established in 2000 and is now very well established and regarded in the industry.
“Making it onto our shortlist is an achievement in itself, and one of which the James Legal team can feel justifiably proud. We’re looking forward to seeing them on the night, and wish them all the best.”
Determined to be different
Our Managing Director and Solicitor Nick Miller, who is nominated in the Managing Partner of the Year category, established James Legal in 2009 as a firm of two solicitors, specialising in business law, and we’ve since grown tenfold. The awards nomination highlighted his passion and vision for the firm, which is centred on taking a ‘fresh approach to law’ and being ‘people first and lawyers second’.
Nick is also driven by contributing to the development and modernisation of the legal industry, by leading a practice where out-of-hours availability, approachability, fee transparency and a commitment to advising clients on what is in their best interests – even if that is not profit-making legal work – is the standard.
A successful entrepreneur and outstanding lawyer himself, Nick is a strong leader who is driven by offering 360-degree support to companies, which includes help with their business development as well as legal needs. He has built an outstanding and committed team who champion his vision of combining commitment and results, with the human touch, and ‘treating every client like a VIP’.
The nomination in the ‘Legal Firm – 1-10 Partners’ category, focused on the firm’s growth, from just two solicitors to employing 21 people – ranging from solicitors to trainees and apprentices.
The nomination read: “We have developed particular specialisms in business, commercial, litigation, dispute resolution and commercial property, as well as seeking to service our business clients’ own needs by expanding our personal law offering to include family law, Wills and probate and residential conveyancing.
“Commercially focused and entrepreneurial by nature, our market share is growing significantly year-on-year and we have become a key player in the regional legal market. We are proud to have helped many of our clients to flourish and achieve or exceed their own business goals.”
The nomination in the ‘Pro-bono’ category focused on our contribution to our regional community.
Over the past 18 months, this has included offering free help worth more than £55,000 to families during 2016, as well as producing 300 ‘free’ Wills with several charities, raising donations worth a total of almost £14,000 for over 50 charities including Hull’s Dove House Hospice.
Our groundbreaking James Legal - The Business 2017 campaign is our major strategic corporate social responsibility initiative, which is acting as a catalyst for business prosperity locally.
The nomination in this category read: “We believe that part of our role as legal professionals, is to champion equality of access to legal advice for everyone. This is because getting the right legal advice can not only change the outcome of a particular issue. It can transform someone’s whole life.
“Meanwhile, our James Legal – The Business 2017 campaign is aimed at helping local businesses to capitalise on the unique opportunity Hull’s status as City of Culture 2017 represents, by bringing representatives together to learn, collaborate and showcase what they offer.”
This campaign has so far directly involved almost 150 local business people and includes educational and informative content, free quarterly masterclasses featuring high profile speakers, and packages of business support worth £45,000 which will be won by the two stand-out companies that are chosen to win our Business Booster competition (part of the campaign).
Commenting on the awards shortlisting, Nick said: “I’m delighted about this recognition, mainly for our team, who are lovely people, fantastically talented and utterly committed to what they do.
“We are motivated by offering people the best possible legal support. However, if being recognised for that makes more people aware of what we offer, then that’s fantastic.”
