Further Expansion Spurs Appointment of our Third Director

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve promoted our senior solicitor Gary Swann to a leading role at James Legal, as a result of our ongoing expansion.

This follows a 400 per cent increase in our size over the past five years.

Gary’s appointment is a strong signal that we are ripe for expansion, having recorded our busiest year ever in 2016 – thanks in part to what we have previously dubbed a ‘perfect storm of positivity’ surrounding Hull’s hosting of UK City of Culture in 2017.

Gary is our second new directorship of the year – the first was senior solicitor Kelly Bannister, who specialises in commercial property. We now employ a total of 22 people, compared to just five in 2011, and we are currently looking to recruit another four lawyers by the beginning of 2017. We are also ready to consider taking our successful Hull brand into new territories, with the possibility of a new office in North Lincolnshire next year. “Expanding James Legal has always been my vision, but we’ve been keen to wait until the right time to go ahead,” said Nick, our director.

We pride ourselves on taking a fresh approach to law, and that means having the right people in the right roles – not just in terms of their legal expertise but, equally importantly, their personality too. We aim to be people first and lawyers second, taking the time to really get to know our clients and their businesses and not only building long term relationships with them, but also helping them in a way which is right for them and their business.

Gary is the epitome of what we stand for – a genuinely nice guy who is also a very strong litigation solicitor with many decades of legal and tactical experience, who stops at nothing to represent our clients’ best interests. We are really proud to see him take up this important leadership role within our team, and excited to see him open the next chapter for our firm over the year ahead.

We’ve seen a huge upsurge in activity among the business clients we deal with, with investment and expansion among East Yorkshire businesses and significant new players deciding to locate to the area on the back of the regeneration taking place around 2017. This is having a positive knock-on effect on us, as business lawyers.

Gary said: “At my stage of a legal career, many people would be thinking of winding down and taking things a bit easier. However, for me it’s totally the opposite. I’m passionate about our team and what James Legal brings to law, and the work this enables me to do with clients in Hull and surrounding area.

“Having the opportunity to champion our expansion with a possible new office further afield, and make the James Legal experience available to more people, is a real privilege for me and I can’t wait to bring it to fruition.”

Gary is a graduate of Oxford University and won the Herbert Willerson prize for law while at law school in 1987. He qualified as a solicitor in 1990 and is familiar with Lincolnshire, having been a partner in a local firm for a number of years. Specialising in commercial matters such as disputes and litigation, he also has experience of many other areas of law, including commercial and residential property, agricultural and overseas matters, land issues such as boundaries and rights of way, and estates. He will be building a team who can offer a wide range of quality legal support to clients south of the Humber.
