Celebrating diversity at Hull Pride 2018

Doing anything special on Saturday July 21? If Hull’s Pride 2018 mega event isn’t already in your diary, then create that appointment right now!

This annual celebration of diversity has been on the go for 15 years and each year it just gets bigger and better. Last year James Legal was proud to support the event as a sponsor and official legal partner, and this year we’re very pleased to be doing the same again.

Event organisers Pride in Hull started out with a sound system and a handful of acts in the city’s Queen’s Gardens, progressing to West Park with pop protégé Alexandra Burke, and Sinitta in Baker Street, before returning full circle last year to Queen’s Gardens as part of the City of Culture celebrations and the inaugural UK Pride event.

This family-friendly music fest is completely free, although there will be donation buckets on the day and all contributions will be gratefully received to help make next year’s event possible. No tickets required, no pay-on-the-door, just turn up with your dancing shoes and get ready to express yourself!

Friends and allies

The Pride purpose is simple. Heath Marsh-Mcleod, Pride in Hull Trustee, said: “We’re here to celebrate the LGBT+ community with our friends and allies. We want to celebrate diverse sexualities and genders and to uplift communities. This is a massive party to basically tell people that they do fit in here.”

Pride in Hull is a registered charity, run by volunteers on a not for profit basis. Heath added: “We make Pride in Hull happen because we love it and we’ve seen first-hand the effects it has on people’s lives and on the community as a whole. Last year was absolutely amazing – more than 44,000 people joined us across the day for a huge programme of music, performance and culture.

“Over the past year we’ve been working up a stunning Pride 2018 schedule and will be bringing Eurovision icon SuRie, pop genius Bright Light Bright Light, Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud and Drag Race royalty Adore Delano plus lots more brilliant acts to Queens Gardens on July 21.”

Audience feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “People tell us they feel safe,” said Heath. “They talk about feeling accepted for the first time. The positive glow of Pride in Hull is felt long after the stage comes down.”

Different in a good way

James Legal prides itself on taking a fresh approach to legal services, and the values underpinning Pride in Hull are something that really resonate with the team. James Legal Managing Director Nick Miller said: “Pride is a great cause and one I feel privileged to work with. Pride represents happiness for many people. I am keen on everyone finding their ‘happy’, and it is great that everyone can now express and be themselves in order to do that.

“Thankfully, we’re all moving towards a society and world which does not tolerate discrimination for people who are living with or seeking their happy.

“We share the ethos of the Pride campaign, we respect all our colleagues and clients as individuals and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.”

Display your true colours

The fun begins at noon on July 21 with a spectacular parade from Hull College starring street artists and specially commissioned performances from Back to Ours, alongside everyday heroes from local organisations. Audience participation is more than welcome!

The parade will wind its way to Queens Gardens, which opens at 12.30pm, and where the party will get into full swing as the fantastic repertoire of acts take to the main stage. The Culture Symphonia Orchestra, based in Hull, will open this year’s event, playing a variety of dance music orchestrally. Head to the Pride market for all your essentials to customise your Pride experience, whether that’s drinks and snacks from the street food festival or finishing off your look with glitter.

Nick added: “James Legal will have a stand in Queen’s Gardens so come on over and say hello to our friendly team, and maybe pick up a pair of our special pink briefs!”

The line-up

Adore Delano

Adore Delano was a finalist on the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and also competed in the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Away from the show, Adore’s debut album ‘Till Death Do Us Party’ was a hit on the US Billboard chart – making her the first drag queen to impact that chart since RuPaul herself – and her most recent album ‘Whatever’ was released to critical acclaim in 2017.

Bright Light Bright Light

Fresh off the back of a world tour with Erasure and a barnstorming performance at LGBT50’s ‘I Feel Love’ gig in 2017, ‘the male Robyn’ is warming up for a new headline tour and the release of his fourth album, the follow up to the critically acclaimed technicolour triumph ‘Choreography’, which featured appearances from Elton John, Ana Matronic and Jake Shears, to name only three. Expect sax, style, sass accompanying some big heartfelt pop.

SuRie

This year’s UK Eurovision representative will be heading to Hull fresh off the back of a successful solo tour. As well as playing her Eurovision hit ‘Storm’, she’ll be treating us to her new single ‘Taking It Over’, along with some Eurovision classics.

Lloyd Daniels

After winning the nation’s hearts on the sixth series of the X-Factor, Lloyd Daniels has gone on to triumphant performances across the UK including a star turn in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ and will be starring alongside Atomic Kitten’s Natasha Hamilton in LGBTQ musical ‘Closets’ this August.

Plus: Culture:Orchestra, Rainbow Choir, Soho Cinders, Lady Zaza, Park Street, BPM, Exclusive Dance Academy, Samantha Atkinson, Skyline Studios, Street Stars, Soraya Vivien and more.
